I do have a life away from the computer, but my marketing job does involve regular and prolonged use of Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and other popular social network sites. I draft, revise and manage advertising campaigns on these and other similar sites. I would like to talk a bit about how the relationship between a successful social marketing campaign and time.
There are two popular misconceptions going around in regards to social media marketing. People either think that it would be a full time job or a simple job that can be completed in a matter of minutes. While a targeted marketing campaign does not take up all my free time, it is very time consuming and I put in the hours to do the job professionally and successfully. It comes to a surprise to many companies to realize just how long it takes to build fans and followers, connect with present and potential customers and build awareness of the brand or company name.
It is incredible how much content is shared on a weekly basis. It has been estimated that over five billion pieces of brand new content are posted on Facebook every single week. To run a successful marketing campaign on this or another site, one has to ensure that the campaign connects with people effectively and targets those who would most likely be interested in what the particular company has to offer.
Timing is an important part of a social media advertisement campaign, as is planning. One needs to take the time to research and plan the campaign properly or it will not be successful. While Tweeting or putting up a short Facebook post is easy, it is not easy to create a Tweet or post that is engaging and that will draw in fans and potential customers.
Once a post or Tweet has been properly planned, it should be put up right away. Circumstances, fashions and fads change so often that a campaign that would have hit the mark a week ago may be completely useless today. It is also important to realize that social media sites continually change their social media marketing policies. Something that is presently allowed may not be allowed the next day.
The realm of social media is ever changing. It is important to keep a company’s social media site updated on a regular basis. A company that has gained a strong following can easily lose it if the site becomes staid or out of date. Creating and maintaining a strong fan base and following requires continued research and new forms of advertisement and promotion. A company has to keep up with the times or it will lose out.
Social media marketing can be time consuming, but it is very much worth the work. It is an investment that will get a company noticed and bring in new customers. Most everyone manages to find time to build up a virtual farm; there is no excuse for a company or professional not making time to engage in profitable and successful social marketing.
